Risk Management Rounds
Psychiatry

Overview

While psychiatry enjoys a relatively low ranking among the specialties in terms of malpractice risk, it does have several unique areas of practice that have been shown to be more likely to result in litigation.  Psychiatrists, like all physicians, must be aware of the risks inherent in their day-to-day practice and of the tactics they can use to reduce these risks. That’s why this course has been developed.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Analyze a case scenario to determine whether it meets the criteria for malpractice.
2. Identify five common sources of error in psychiatry.
3. Discuss strategies for avoiding error in psychiatry.
4. Recognize risks associated with restraints, commitment and other medical-legal issues.

This course is designed for psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who are interested in practical ways to limit their malpractice liability.
