Overview
This course was developed to help physicians identify and address five common practice areas that could adversely affect patient safety and lead to medical errors.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:
1. Identify and address issues related to communication with patients, to improve patient compliance and reduce medical errors.
2. Identify and address issues related to communication with colleagues, to reduce the risk of errors such as wrong-site surgery and miscommunication that can lead to delayed diagnoses.
3. Identify and address issues related to the medical office environment, to enable physicians to identify root causes of office-based medical errors and remedy them so they won’t be repeated.
4. Identify and address issues associated with professional ethics, including protecting patients’ interests in a managed care environment.
5. Document patient care in a manner that reduces the likelihood that medical errors, including misdiagnoses, will occur.
6. Discuss five most common sources of medical error and missed diagnoses, and ways to prevent them.
Target Audience
This course is designed for physicians of all specialties who want to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety.
Metholodogy
This is a self-study course consisting of text and CME test. Physicians should read the course content, answer the test questions and submit the answers for scoring. Those who complete the course with a score of 80 percent or higher will earn a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM.
